i haven't slept in countless nights
we've drilled through the earth like rats searching for water
i remember the city
a compass pointing exactly where i need to go
the days are long the nights are long
we live in metropolitan zones
with buses and dusty streets
close to the city and its great corporations
life is different here
bodies barely move in the wait for happiness
access zones are restricted
to keep writing you have to go down
somewhere into a cellar or a basement
and i go down
the cool air caresses me like a purring cat
silence makes me dream
here the seismic waves of the earth are clearer
among wine bottles lined up on shelves
and jars left from last year
i feel familiar steps
it's the grandparents and all who once died
one day you will too
but here in this shelter you feel safest
you don’t have to pretend
that you laugh
that you cry
that you're afraid
it's summer and the rats are dying
other bodies walk through the heat
we pretend not to see them
here in the metropolitan zones in our hearts everything is dead
only the memory of the city still makes us flinch
and yet something pulses in the cracked asphalt
something that screams without a voice
an arrow shot into a neon sky
beneath which we bleed beautifully in silence
a single thought
caught on an electric cable
struggles like a bird burned by current
and no one reaches out a hand anymore
